Our 8 Favourite Summer Activities for Toddlers

7 min read | 31 January 2021

There are so many fun ways to keep your toddler entertained (and cool!) on long hot days. We’ve pulled together the best summer toddler activities that are bound to keep them amused for hours.

1. Icy-Pole Making

When it comes to indoor summer activities for toddlers, icy-pole making is a favourite for parents and kids alike. Not only is it fun to create your own flavours, but the eating part is also pretty great too!

You’ll need:
  • Icy-pole molds

  • Fruit juice (or yogurt, blended until smooth)

  • Small pieces of fresh fruit

Help your little one to add their favourite pieces of fruit to the icy-pole molds. Top with juice or yogurt and freeze until firm. In just a couple of hours, they’ll have a cool (and healthy) treat to snack on!

2. At-Home Water Park

One of the best summer outdoor activities for toddlers, an at-home water park is hours of fun and a great way to avoid the crowds at the local pool.

You’ll need:
  • An inflatable pool or sprinkler

  • A hose

  • Swimwear

    for your little one

Dress your little one in their bathers, set up the inflatable pool or sprinkler and watch them splash and play in the water. Always supervise children around water.

3. Painting with Coloured Ice

Make your very own ‘watercolour paints’ and help your toddler create a work of art!

You’ll need:
  • Coloured food dye

  • Ice tray

  • Water

  • Popsicle sticks

  • Paper

Squeeze a few drops of food dye into an ice tray, then add water and a popsicle stick to each cube and pop in the freezer. Once your coloured ice is frozen, you little one can use them to paint a masterpiece!

4. Make Your Own Bird Feeder

Attract bright and colourful birds to your backyard or outdoor area with a homemade bird feeder that you can make with your little one.

You’ll need:
  • 1 cup native bird seed mix

  • 2 tablespoons of flour

  • ¼ cup of water

  • Drinking straw

  • String

  • Tray lined with baking paper

Mix the bird seed mix, flour and water together, then press on to the tray. Using a cookie cutter, cut shapes in the bird seed mix, then use the drinking straw to cut a hole in the top of the shape. Leave to dry overnight, then feed the string through the hole at the top. Head outside with your little one, choose a spot to hang up your bird feeder and watch the birds flock!

5. Ice Block Excavation

There are so many great summer activities for toddlers that involve ice, but ice block excavation is definitely one of our favourites.

You’ll need:
  • A large plastic food container (a plastic ice cream tub would work well too!)

  • Things to ‘excavate’, like little toys (for example small cars, animal figurines or plastic building blocks), shells, leaves, flowers, or even glitter!

  • Water

  • Sponges, brushes and warm water for ‘excavating’

Pop all the toys, shells, leaves and flowers into the plastic food container, fill it with water and pop it in the freezer. Once it’s frozen solid, turn the treasure-filled ice-block out onto a hard surface outside. Your little one will be able to find the treasures in the ice by melting it with warm water, sponges and brushes.

6. Water Play

A little bit of water and some old kitchen items can lead to hours of fun for toddlers. Set them up in a shady spot outside and let the fun begin!

You’ll need:
  • Old kitchen items – think pots, pans, slotted spoons, soup ladles, sifters, sieves, plastic containers.

  • Two tubs – one filled with water, the other filled with sand or dirt, or just left empty

Show your little one how to pour water, dirt and sand from one container to another using different utensils. You could even help them mix up a ‘nature soup’ by adding grass, leaves and flowers.

7. Chalk Drawings

Letting your toddler unleash their inner artist outside is a great way for them to get creative and learn about colours and shapes.

You’ll need:
  • A bucket of chalk

Set your little ones up with the chalk on pavement, bricks or tiles, then show them the different colours and help them draw different shapes - or just let their imagination take over!

8. Bubble Fun

Create a little bit of bubbly magic for your toddler at home.

You’ll need:
  • 6 cups of water

  • 2 cups liquid dishwashing soap

  • ¾ cup of corn syrup (glucose syrup)

  • Bubble wands (you can use pipe cleaners or wire coat hangers to make your own!)

Combine the water, soap and corn syrup in a large mixing bowl. Leave for four hours, then pour into a shallow pan. Show your little one how to dip the wand into the bubble solution and wave their arm to make bubbles.

Your little ones will love playing all summer long in our latest range of clothing for toddlers.
