Summer days can be magical, but when you're caring for a newborn, hot weather can quickly become a worry. Babies are more sensitive to heat than adults and can overheat faster, which makes planning ahead essential. If you’re wondering how to keep your newborn cool in summer, here are 6 practical, baby-safe tips to help your little one stay comfortable when the temperature rises.
Stick to light, breathable fabrics like cotton, and avoid overdressing. On very warm days, a nappy and singlet or short-sleeve bodysuit may be all your baby needs - something like our 4 Pack Rib Singlet in White is perfect for layering or wearing on its own.
Summer baby care tip: Choose light clothing with minimal layers and ensure any accessories like hats are breathable and sun-safe. Look for UPF 50+ sun hats with a wide or brimmed hat design to protect your baby’s face and neck.
Investing in a room or baby thermometer can be helpful to monitor temperatures accurately, especially during warm nights or heatwaves.
A fan in the room (positioned away from your baby) or natural cross-ventilation can help lower the temperature. During the day, keep blinds or curtains closed to block out direct sunlight.
Room cooling tips:
Use a fan to circulate air (never place it where air blows directly on baby)
Keep the room shaded
Remove unnecessary bedding
Newborns can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults, and they also can’t tell you when they’re thirsty. Offering more frequent breastfeeds or bottle feeds helps them stay hydrated.
Hot weather tips for babies:
Watch for signs of dehydration (fewer wet nappies, sleepiness)
Feed on demand rather than to a set schedule
Try to avoid going out during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 11am and 3pm. If you do need to be out and about, keep your baby in the shade and use a pram with good ventilation.
Sun protection tip: Always ensure your baby is shaded and wearing a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors during summer months.
If your baby seems warm, gently wiping their hands and feet with a cool (not cold) damp cloth can help. A quick lukewarm bath, ideally around 36–37°C (close to body temperature), is also a great way to lower their body temperature safely.
Summer baby care tip: Test the water temperature with your elbow before bathing your newborn.
Use lightweight cotton sheets and remove extra blankets or padding. A low-tog sleeping bag (if used) should be suitable for warm weather, but always check your baby’s chest or back for warmth — hands and feet often feel cool and aren’t a reliable indicator.
Keeping baby cool tip: If your baby is sweaty or flushed, it may be time to remove a layer or cool the room further.
Babies can’t tell us when they’re feeling uncomfortable, but there are a few signs to watch for:
Feel their chest or back - these areas should feel warm, not hot or sweaty
Look for flushed cheeks or rapid breathing
Watch for irritability, restlessness, or if they seem unusually sleepy
Monitor for heat rash, which can appear as tiny red bumps or patches, often in skin folds or areas where clothing traps heat. Dressing your baby in light, breathable clothing during warmer weather can help prevent heat rash and keep them more comfortable.
Hands and feet may feel cool - that’s normal and not a reliable sign of overheating.
