Dummies work with your baby's natural sucking instinct — useful for settling between feeds or helping your little one ease into sleep. Purebaby's dummies are made from body-safe materials, free from BPA, PVC, and phthalates, and sized for newborns through to older babies. Simple, practical, and made to the same standard as the rest of the range.
What to Look for in a Baby Dummy
Material and shape are the two things worth getting right. Natural rubber is soft and flexible, with a feel closer to skin — many babies settle into it easily. Silicone is firmer, odourless, and holds up well through repeated sterilising. Both are good options; it often comes down to what your little one prefers. Look for a BPA-free teat that meets Australian safety standards. An orthodontic shape is worth choosing if you can — the flattened teat sits more naturally against the tongue, which suits most babies better than a round one. Size is straightforward: a newborn dummy (0–6 months) is smaller to fit safely, and most babies move up at around six months.

When and How to Use a Baby Dummy
If you're breastfeeding, the Australian Breastfeeding Association recommends waiting until feeding is well established — around three to four weeks — before introducing a dummy. This gives your milk supply time to settle and helps your little one develop a consistent latch. For formula-fed babies, a dummy can be offered from birth. Red Nose Australia notes that offering a dummy at sleep time is associated with a reduced risk of SIDS — there's no need to reinsert it if it falls out, but it's worth offering at the start of sleep if your baby takes one. Before first use and regularly after, sterilise by boiling in water for five minutes or using a steam steriliser. Check the teat each time — replace it at the first sign of cracking or change in texture.
